Ingredients

  • ¾ oz. freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • ¾ oz. homemade simple syrup
  • 2 oz. smooth bourbon
  • ½ oz. egg white optional, for a silky texture
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters adds complexity and depth
  • ½ orange wheel for garnish
  • Maraschino cherry for garnish

Equipment

  •  Cocktail shaker

Method

  1. In a small saucepan, combine equal parts sugar and water. Heat gently, stirring until the sugar dissolves completely. Allow it to cool, and then store it in an airtight container.
  2. In a cocktail shaker, combine the freshly squeezed lemon juice, homemade simple syrup, bourbon, and egg white (if using). Remember, the egg white is optional, but it adds a nice texture!
  3. Do a “dry shake” by shaking the shaker without ice for about 15 seconds. This helps foam the egg white efficiently.
  4. Now add ice to the shaker and shake vigorously for another 15 seconds. The goal here is to chill the drink and mix all the ingredients beautifully.
  5. Strain the cocktail into a chilled glass. If you want a smoother drink, you can use a fine mesh strainer for double straining.
  6. Add the orange wheel and a maraschino cherry to the top for that classic finish.

Notes

  • Use Fresh Ingredients: Fresh lemon juice is non-negotiable. Bottled juice just won’t cut it.
  • Experiment with Bourbon: Different bourbons can change the whole drink, so feel free to find your favorite.
  • Make Ahead: You can prepare the simple syrup in advance and store it.
  • Proper Shaking Is Key: Don’t skip the dry shake step. It’s crucial for the foamy texture.
  • Adjust Sweetness: Tweak the amount of simple syrup to suit your taste.
